History: The Royal Assembly Hall in South Shields, built in 1890, was a grand building with a ballroom and stage that was later converted into the Scala Cinema in 1920, then the Gaumont Cinema in 1951. The building still stands today, located at 10 Mile End Road, and is home to a nightclub and other venues, with a small part of the original frontage still visible.  Opening in 1890 as the Royal Assembly Hall, an entertainment venue with a ballroom and stage. It was converted into a cinema called the Scala in 1920, which included a conservatory cafe above the main entrance. It was renamed the Gaumont in 1951, and the Ocean Road entrance was closed in 1960. The building still exists on Mile End Road and is now home to a nightclub and other venues, including a live music and comedy venue called The Venue/Ignition. Despite modifications, some of the original ornate features are still in place.

Ghosts: Having the privilege to be the first paranormal team to investigate this fantastic building, proved to put us on edge after one of the team was physically grabbed in the now bar area upstairs. We witnessed loud footsteps in the ground floor area when no one else was in the building. Knocks on demand in the attic and a very creepy cellar that told us to ‘leave’ on our spirit speaker box.

History: Site of 12th-century castle was one of the strongholds handed over to the English after the Treaty of Falaise to release William the Lyon from captivity, but it was recovered by the Scots. Malcolm the Maiden died here in 1165. The prison closed in 1880. Jedburgh Castle Jail is now a museum, with a fascinating display of exhibits relating to 19th-century prison life.

Ghosts: One of the ghost of Jedburgh Jail is Edwin McArthur, a prisoner who was executed here in 1855 who wonders the corridor of the derelict men’s wing intimidating people. Children’s voices have been heard on equipment asking for help and a heavy cell door slamming shut in front of our guests by unseen hands.
